Blast Processed Weeb Music

This is a collection of Japanese anime songs covered in a 16-bit style. All of them were created with Deflemask, a chiptune tracker that stays true to the hardware of the Sega Genesis and other old retro consoles. Each song could theoretically, with the right tools, be played back on a real Sega Genesis.

A Basic Explanation of the Genesis' Sound Limitations

The Sega Genesis had 6 FM channels and 4 square wave generators, each one only capable of one note at a time. One FM channel was limited to sound samples only (in my case, percussion) and one square wave channel was used for white noise only, at the loss of square wave channel #3. This means I was limited to 7 channels for non-percussion instruments and 2 channels for percussion. Trying to work with those limitations was a fun challenge. There was a lot of deciding what sounds in the song were important enough to include and what could be left out.

The Songs

Oto no Naru Hou e→ (オトノナルホウヘ→)

from Silver Spoon 2nd Season (Gin no Saji 2nd Season, 銀の匙2ndシーズン)

This is my all-time favorite anime song and I fell in love with it the moment I first heard it. The group that sang it is called "Goose House" and you should check them out, they're very good.

crossing field

from Sword Art Online (ソードアート・オンライン)

The very first opening from the very first anime I watched. It holds a special place in my heart even though, in my opinion, the show took a nosedive halfway through the first season and I wouldn't recommend it to anybody.

It also took me way too long to get a lead instrument that didn't sound like garbage haha

Sparkling Daydream

from Love, Chunibyou, and Other Delusions! (Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!, 中二病でも恋がしたい! )

This was the first of these that I was really proud of. It also got nearly 1000 plays in one day on SoundCloud one time and I still have no idea how that happened.

Ne, Issho ni Kaero. (ね、いっしょにかえろ。)

from Hitoribocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu (ひとりぼっちの○○生活)

Another song that I instantly fell in love with. I could probably listen to the chorus on repeat for hours and never get tired of it.

from Wagnaria!!2 (Working'!!, ワーキング’!!)

This was the second anime cover I did. The first one was so bad that I refuse to post it anywhere lol

from Nichijou - My Ordinary Life (日常)

This song has an a cappella version performed in the show that I almost covered instead of the original. Also Nichijou is one of the funniest shows I've ever had the pleasure of watching.

lull ~Soshite Bokura wa~ (lull ~そして僕らは~)

from A Lull in the Sea (Nagi no Asukara, 凪のあすから)

When I was trying to decide what songs I wanted to cover, this one jumped out at me immediately. I wasn't a big fan of how the TV edit ended, so I extended the ending to match the full song.

Dakara, Hitori ja nai (だから, ひとりじゃない)

from My Hero Academia 2 (Boku no Hero Academia 2nd Season, 僕のヒーローアカデミア 2ndシーズン)

Pretty sure I had this song stuck in my head the entire time this season was airing.

May I Help You? (めいあいへるぷゆー?)

from Servant x Service (サーバント×サービス)

The first time I heard this I thought, "It would be hilarious if I even attempted to do a cover of this. There's no way though, it's too complex. I'd never do it."

But then I did it anyway. Follow your dreams, kids.

One In A Billion

from Restaurant to Another World (Isekai Shokudou, 異世界食堂)

I never actually watched this show past the first couple of episodes but the opening song was catchy and I liked it.

Hyadain no Kakakata☆Kataomoi - C

from Nichijou - My Ordinary Life (日常)

Ah yes, this song. The one that took me a billion years to finish. Leave it to Nichijou to have an opening that is a total nightmare to try and cover by ear. It still keeps me up at night to this day.

...okay maybe not but still. I'm happy to never step foot around this one again lol

from Sakura Quest (サクラクエスト)

I was this close to covering the opening for this show instead of the ending, but I went with the ending. Maybe one day I'll do the opening anyway hmm......

Koko kara, Koko kara (ここから、ここから)

from A Place Further Than The Universe (Sora yori mo Tooi Basho, 宇宙よりも遠い場所)

This is just a good song, y'all.

Orange (オレンジ)

from Toradora! (とらドラ!)

Almost did the first ending instead of this one, but it already had some chiptune-y sound, so I did this song instead.

Saturday Night Question (サタデー・ナイト・クエスチョン)

from Recovery of an MMO Junkie (Net-juu no Susume, ネト充のススメ)

My first attempt at a more hard-rock song. I think I did a lot better with "crossing field" but I just loved this show so much that I had to try my hand at it.

from Cells at Work! (Hataraku Saibou, はたらく細胞)

Someone suggested I try the opening to this show, but it had too many spoken word parts that I couldn't find a way to handle. I compromised by doing the ending instead.

Ishukan Communication (イシュカン・コミュニケーション)

from Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid (Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon, 小林さんちのメイドラゴン)

I didn't get far into this show for a variety of reasons, but the ending song always stuck with me.

Also I admit that I cheated a little on this one. I "bitcrushed" the voice sample you hear right before the chorus and added it in outside of Deflemask.

Shinryaku no Susume☆ (侵略ノススメ☆)

from Squid Girl (Shinryaku! Ika Musume, 侵略!イカ娘)

Another show I didn't actually watch, but the opening song was asking to be fed through the blast-processor. The background bleeps during the verse took a million years to do and I'm pretty sure I still have carpal tunnel from that.
